Before the Show: A Midsummer Night’s Dream Summary
Coming to see A Midsummer Night’s Dream and need a quick refresh on the story? Here is your cheat sheet to Shakespeare’s whimsical comedy! A play within a play, a love triangle caused by a mischievous fairy, and a man with the head of a donkey all add up to a hilarious night of magical mayhem!
Now, here is the complete summary:
Our story begins with a celebration in Athens, where the Duke ,Theseus, is preparing to marry Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. But not everyone is celebrating! Egeus brings his daughter Hermia before the Duke, demanding she marry Demetrius, despite Hermia being head over heels in love with Lysander. Refusing to give up on each other, Hermia and Lysander plan to run away and marry in the magical forest. Hermia confides in her friend Helena, who is hopelessly in love with Demetrius. Hoping to win his affection, Helena tells Demetrius about the lovers’ plan, and soon all four find themselves heading into the woods, setting the stage for a night of magical mishaps!
Meanwhile, the forest is home to the feuding fairy royals, King Oberon and Queen Titania. When Oberon’s attempt to get his way goes awry, he sends his spirited servant Puck on a mission to fetch a magical plant to teach Titania a lesson. The juice of this enchanted plant causes anyone who receives it in their eyes to fall madly in love with the first person they see when they awake.
Elsewhere in the forest, an amateur troupe of actors are preparing their play of the tragic love-story of Pyramus and Thisbe, for the Duke’s wedding. The mischievous Puck plays a trick on the actors and gives one of the mechanics, Bottom, the head of a donkey. So, when Titania wakes from Oberon’s spell, she falls madly in love with the ass!
Watching from afar, Oberon overhears Helena pleading with Demetrius to love her and decides to help. He sends Puck to cast a spell on Demetrius with the magical plant, but Puck mistakenly enchants Lysander instead! When Oberon discovers the mix-up, he enchants Demetrius too, causing both men to be madly in love with Helena and leaving Hermia wondering what has happened to her Lysander.
Eventually, Oberon, King of the Fairies, lifts the spell, restoring Lysander’s love for Hermia and freeing Titania from the spell. By morning, the four lovers awake and are reunited, believing their adventures from the night before to be a dream. The Duke Theseus agrees to their marriages, and in a classic Shakespearean ending, the couples celebrate with a triple wedding, and the actors perform their hilariously disastrous play.
