Incursions (NSW)

Incursions & Immersions

The Australian Shakespeare Company’s theatre education program offers Australia’s most extensive and dynamic line-up of in-school workshops and industry run courses. Available right across New South Wales, our program is designed to take the shackles of Shakespeare and other classical texts, and let young imaginations run wild.

Our Focus:

CONNECT. COMPREHEND. APPRECIATE. EXPRESS.

Connect with the characters through robust performances delivered by seasoned actors and the students themselves.

Comprehend the context of the play, the themes and meaning of the text using active rehearsal room techniques.

Appreciate the brilliance of the writing through analysis of the form, features and structure.

Express as a creator when directing and performing scenes and through personal, analytical and creative writing. And play.

HSC Texts

MERCHANT OF VENICE

HSC Module: Text and Human Experiences

Captivating performances of key scenes and speeches that specifically give insight into the anomalies and paradoxes in human behavior. We investigate the motivations of the central characters by putting them on trial. Students experience the lens of both traditional and contemporary performance contexts.

RICHARD III

HSC Module: Textual Conversations

Challenging students to re-imagine key scenes between the central characters and monologues from the play to deepen their connection to it and encourage their ability to draw parallels. With a rich exploration of the characters and analysis of the historical context, students then leap imaginatively into the role of composer to influence the text with their own expression.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

HSC Module: Close Study of Literature

Encapsulating the whole play and the interweaving worlds of the humans, fairies and mechanicals to give students a rich experience of this playful text in performance. Students then experiment with ideas, forms and language enabling them to express their own interpretations.

ROMEO & JULIET

Arguably the most famous love story of all time, the Romeo & Juliet session focuses on the nature of violence and love as depicted in the play, the relationship between the star-crossed lovers and their character development, an investigation as to who or what is responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, and the position of women in a patriarchal society.

MACBETH

This session focuses on the supernatural vs psychological, the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, fate and destiny, the nature of ambition, Shakespeare as a writer of historical fiction and the dark imagery of the play.

PLAY ON SHAKESPEARE

A riotous 1 hour introduction to the words, worlds and works of The Bard, this fast paced interactive show is perfect for upper Primary and lower Secondary students. Featuring Bottom and Titania’s unlikely romantic encounter from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, the beautiful balcony scene from ‘Romeo and Juliet’, Macbeth’s infamous banquet and the fatal final duel from ‘Hamlet’.
