The Macbeths are back with their unparalleled thirst for the ultimate power of the throne.
“Their passion for each other is absolute in every way, as much metaphysical as erotic. The lust for power fuses with mutual desire and enhances the turbulence.”
A stunning mix of mind games and manipulation, sparked by the prophesies of three witches that Macbeth encounters on the heath as he returns from war, triggers his burning ambition which in turn ignites an inferno in his wife to inspire him to kill for the crown.
Invading armies, blood, dark magic, sabotage, power, storms and ghosts of our pasts. Take all the spirits of those who have strived for power and relentlessly fought for control. This is the story of Macbeth.
“Macbeth, accusing himself of poor malice or inadequate slaughter, rouses himself to an apocalyptic ambition to tear apart the universe itself, destroying this world and the world to come."

Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a gripping tragedy of ambition, power, and moral corruption. Set in the tumultuous world of medieval Scotland, the play follows the rise and fall of Macbeth, a once-noble warrior who succumbs to the darker forces of his nature in his pursuit of the throne.
The story begins on a desolate heath, where Macbeth and his loyal comrade, Banquo, encounter three mysterious witches. The witches greet Macbeth with prophetic words, hailing him as the Thane of Glamis (his current title), the Thane of Cawdor (a title he does not yet hold), and finally, as the future King of Scotland. They also foretell that Banquo’s descendants will inherit the throne, though Banquo himself will not rule. Shortly after, messengers arrive to announce that King Duncan has bestowed the title of Thane of Cawdor upon Macbeth, igniting his belief in the witches’ prophecy.
Consumed by the prospect of power, Macbeth shares the prophecy with his wife, Lady Macbeth, whose ruthless ambition surpasses even his own. Together, they conspire to murder King Duncan while he is a guest in their castle. Lady Macbeth’s resolve and manipulation spur Macbeth to commit the regicide, plunging them both into a world of paranoia and guilt.
As Macbeth ascends the throne, his growing insecurity drives him to further violence. Haunted by the witches’ prophecy regarding Banquo’s lineage, he orders the murder of Banquo and Banquo’s young son, Fleance. Although Banquo is killed, Fleance escapes, leaving Macbeth tormented by the threat to his rule. At a royal banquet, Macbeth is confronted by Banquo’s ghost, a harrowing vision that deepens his descent into madness.
Desperate for answers, Macbeth returns to the witches, who offer him cryptic warnings: to beware Macduff, a Scottish nobleman; that no man born of a woman shall harm him; and that he will remain unvanquished until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane Hill. Emboldened by their words, Macbeth believes himself invincible and launches a bloody campaign against his enemies.
Meanwhile, Macduff joins forces with Malcolm, Duncan’s exiled son, to raise an army against Macbeth. Tragedy strikes when Macbeth orders the slaughter of Macduff’s family, fueling Macduff’s determination to bring him to justice. As the opposing forces march on Dunsinane, the witches’ prophecies come to fruition in unexpected ways: soldiers disguise themselves with branches from Birnam Wood, making it appear as though the forest is moving, and Macduff reveals he was born by Caesarean section, not “of a woman” in the natural sense.
In a climactic battle, Macduff confronts and kills Macbeth, restoring order to Scotland. Malcolm ascends the throne, bringing a sense of hope and renewal to a land scarred by tyranny and bloodshed.
At its core, Macbeth is a haunting exploration of unchecked ambition and its devastating consequences. Shakespeare masterfully examines the fragility of the human soul, the corrupting nature of power, and the inevitability of fate.
Note: The Australian Shakespeare Company’s adaptations of Macbeth sometimes streamline the script to heighten the intensity and accessibility of the story. These thoughtful adjustments focus on delivering the powerful themes and dramatic impact of the play while keeping the performance engaging and dynamic for modern audiences.
